 Old and new fans of John Lurie and The Lounge Lizards will love this “official” Web site for the musician and his new record label Strange and Beautiful Music; it will also appeal to fans of Tom Waits and Jim Jarmusch (Lurie acted in his films Down by Law and Stranger than Paradise). Site creators wanted to let people know about Lurie’s music—both current and past—and keep them up-to-date on what's going on with his career. Site content includes Lurie’s bio, current tour dates, news and descriptions and sound samples from a small catalogue of CDs and his videos. It also includes information about current and past musicians associated with The Lounge Lizards. Creative director Paul Kremer, who two years ago, flew from Texas to New York to see the premiere of Lurie’s movie series, “Fishing With John” at The Knitting Factory. He arrived at the door of the club just in time for the screening, with his overnight bag in hand, but was told that the preview was sold out. Dejected and depressed he went to the bar with his pal Andy. After downing two straight gins (no fruit), he spied Lurie chatting, summoned up his guts, swaggered up to him and said, “You know, I flew all the way up here from Texas to see these movies and they're sold out.” Lurie replied, “You guys are with me,” and he led them to the balcony, where they watched the shows together. Afterwards, they thanked John, who replied in that low, drawn out voice of his, “Hey, now you guys owe me a favor.” Well, Kremer didn’t think the opportunity would ever arise to repay that favor, but low and behold...it did. This site is a favor in kind.   | |
