 Norio Matsumoto was born in Japan in 1972. While studying at a Japanese college, he came across a photo book by the late Japanese photographer, Michio Hoshino, and aspired to become a nature photographer himself. Matsumoto bought his first camera, went to the University of Alaska, and started to pursue the career.Every summer since, Norio camps by himself on remote islands for months to search for and photograph Humpback Whales in Southeast Alaska. In the winter months, he camps on glaciers in the Alaska Range to photograph the mountains and aurora while living in a 14-by-16 foot snow cave with outside temperatures hitting -40 F. Matsumoto's works have been published in several prominent magazines including National Geographic Adventure, Rudubon Magazine, and Yama to Keikoku, a Japanese climbing magazine. His aspiration is to continue pursing subjects in Alaska that he feels beautiful and document his magnificent experiences and encounters through a passion of photography. | |
